The best way to cover the vast land that is Peru is to fly from place to place aboard small craft. Air travel to major destinations within the country is fairly reasonable and tourists can reach most historic sites via airplane.
The terrain limits rail travel but the most popular route is the Sacred Valley Railway, which connects Cusco, Machu Picchu, and the Sacred Valley. Tourist trains from Cusco to Machu Picchu are an exciting and easy way to get to the Lost City. Choose from three different trains – basic, first-class, and luxury - all of which take about 4 hours.
Buses are available but take a long time to get from place to place. Rental cars are very expensive and auto travel is not always safe.
