Wildlife of Peru

Alpacas in Peru from the Peru Travel Guide
Peru has the greatest biodiversity in the world and that certainly has bearing on the vast varieties of wildlife that visitors will find when they visit the country. Scientists claim that Peru is home to about 1,800 species of birds, several hundred varieties of mammals, and a rich collection of marine life.

The highlands are famous for camelids – llamas and alpacas – which roam the plains and were once hunted for wool and meat. The Amazon rainforest boasts interesting species of monkeys, snakes, crocodiles, jaguars, and literally hundreds of different kinds of birds, including colorful parrots and macaws. At the dry coastal area, visitors can view more common animals, like deer, skunks, and giant turtles.
